An article in yesterday’s Wall Street Journal, “Heroin Makes a Comeback”, highlights an old problem with a new and deadly twist. Although, prescription pain killers surpassed heroin as the number one new cause of opioid addiction two years ago, the upsurge in heroin use causes new concerns as it now appears as a cheaper alternative to the more expensive pill habit. Social Host Liability – Let’s Take It One Step Further

Rhode Island’s Social Host Liability Statutes are a step in the right direction. Holding adults responsible for promoting or allowing under aged drinking sends the correct message. I wish we had a similar approach to physicians who casually, even if not maliciously, over prescribe  opioid medications. Adding  more laws would not be my first choice. However, as the  prescriptive opioid problem continues to grow, something more than just talking about it, is needed.
